One of the most significant aspects of current hospital care is its multidisciplinary character, which can be seen in how several doctors with different specialisations tly care for any patient in the hospital. The Medical-Surgical Joint Management Unit represents a different way of conducting the internal medical service, based on a system of t medical-surgical management that establishes an intimate collaboration between the hospital's surgeons.
In short, it enables any patient under the care of the surgical services participating in the co-management programme to be evaluated and tracked by a doctor from the Medical-Surgical Joint Management Unit, from the day the patient enters hospital to the day he or she leaves, during the entire care process. The goal of this is prevention and early detection of clinical problems, and any adverse effects that may occur during the patient's care.
In addition, the Medical-Surgical Joint Management Unit also offers a follow-up consultation in the first month after the patient's release, when problems related to imbalances in the treatment established upon the patient being released home are most frequent.
The members of the Medical-Surgical Joint Management Unit are doctors specialising in internal medicine,* all of whom are experts in helping patients hospitalised for any medical or surgical reason, with over 15 years' experience in this activity at Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela.
* Internal medicine is a medical specialisation focused on diagnosing and treating medical illnesses in adults. Its activity in the hospital is generally geared toward inpatients, either to internal medicine itself or as part of referrals from other doctors from all over the hospital, and toward outpatients referred from its own external offices.
